There's no denying it, my roots in the MikroTik world run deep – stretching back almost 18 years now. It started when I was 17, working as a network installer for a local WISP called Web Intact. While repacking the storeroom one day, I stumbled upon a MikroTik RB133. At the time, it was like finding a rock from the moon, I had no idea what to do with it.
However, given its similarities to the Linux environments I was familiar with, it didn't take long for me to fall in love with the power and flexibility of RouterOS. This passion ultimately led me to start MikroCloud in 2019. Through MikroCloud, I was part of a team that serviced thousands of MikroTik users across the globe, granting us invaluable insights into the diverse networks they managed.
That journey taught me many lessons. While some are stories for another time, one persistent theme stood out: network security was often an afterthought. Many networks, even complex ones, had startlingly little visibility into their own security posture. Remember Meris? At the time, it was the largest distributed denial-of-service attack ever reported, powered by an army of poorly configured MikroTik routers turned into zombies. Highlighting the real-world consequences of neglecting basic security hygiene.
When I founded Altostrat, several businesses I'd built relationships with over the years expressed strong interest in this new direction. To help them transition smoothly while we develop our primary offerings, we created a platform incorporating some familiar management features for MikroTiks but with a renewed focus on security – Altostrat SDX Lite.
Security shouldn't be a luxury, it should be a fundamental part of network management. That's why, today, I'm really excited to announce that Network Vulnerability Scanning is now available to all Altostrat SDX Lite users.
What does this mean for you?
Covering the fundamentals of network security can be fairly straightforward, yet it's often overlooked. My hope is that by offering this service to the 3,000+ physical locations currently managed via SDX Lite, we can help elevate the baseline security for these networks.
This is just one step in our journey to making the internet safe. We believe giving you this visibility is crucial for maintaining healthy and resilient networks.
If you'd like more information about the vulnerability scanning feature or Altostrat SDX Lite, please contact us or check the documentation.
